EAST KOLKATA WETLANDS
๐ฟ East Kolkata Wetlands — Kolkata’s Natural Eco-Engine
Hidden on the eastern edge of Kolkata lies one of the world’s most remarkable ecosystems — the East Kolkata Wetlands (EKW). Often called the “Kidneys of Kolkata,” these wetlands quietly sustain the city every day by naturally recycling its wastewater and supporting local livelihoods.
๐ง Nature’s Own Wastewater Treatment System
The East Kolkata Wetlands are the world’s largest natural wastewater treatment system, covering nearly 12,500 hectares. Every day, they recycle around 900 million litres of sewage from the city — using only natural processes involving sunlight, aquatic plants, algae, and microorganisms.
This purified water then supports fish cultivation, vegetable farming, and irrigation, creating an extraordinary cycle where urban waste becomes rural wealth.
๐ A Living Source of Livelihood
More than 50,000 people directly depend on these wetlands for their income. Fisherfolk, farmers, and local communities work together in a sustainable way that blends traditional knowledge with ecological science. The fish farms here produce a significant portion of Kolkata’s daily fish supply, while the fertile soil supports vegetable farming throughout the year.
๐ฑ A Biodiversity Hotspot
EKW is home to over 260 species of fish, 100+ bird species, and several rare amphibians and reptiles. Each winter, migratory birds arrive here, turning the wetlands into a vibrant habitat teeming with life.
๐ Recognized Globally
In 2002, the East Kolkata Wetlands were declared a Ramsar Site, highlighting their global importance for wetland conservation and sustainable urban planning. It remains a shining example of how cities can coexist with nature when managed wisely.
๐ Why It Matters
As urbanization increases, the wetlands face threats from encroachment, pollution, and unplanned development. Protecting EKW isn’t just about conserving nature — it’s about preserving Kolkata’s natural defense system against pollution and climate change.
๐พ The Mrittika Harvest Perspective
At Mrittika Harvest, we believe the East Kolkata Wetlands are a living classroom — a place where sustainability, ecology, and community come together. It’s a reminder that nature already has the solutions to many of our modern problems, if only we learn from it.
Let’s cherish and protect this wonder — for our city, our environment, and our future. ๐๐ง
